Baby-Led Weaning

What will I feed my baby? That’s the first thing that pops in my mind when my baby is turning six months. We are all excited, of course. Who doesn’t want to feed a baby right? But without them knowing, I was thinking of something new, something fun because I don’t want to do the purees anymore. So, that’s the time when I started searching for a method in which the baby will enjoy his mealtime. The BLW got me.

First, let me define Baby-Led Weaning.

What is Baby-Led Weaning?

Baby-Led Weaning (BLW) is a method adding complementary foods to a baby’s diet of breast milk or formula. A method of food progression. BLW facilitates the development of age-appropriate oral motor control while maintaining eating as a positive, interactive experience. Baby-led weaning allows babies to control their food consumption by “self-feeding” from the very beginning of their experiences.

Sounds interesting, isn’t it? But, we have to know more about it.

Jann (my baby) is a preemie baby. I gave birth to him at eight months. When starting BLW, you will have to follow the corrected age for you to start, so I was like ” Oh my God! We have to postponed introducing him to solid foods.” but then, it’s okay because we still haven’t completed yet the ” Five Signs of Readiness ” to fully start BLW.

Do not rush! You have to complete all the signs for your baby’s safety.

The Five Signs of Readiness:

  1. Your baby is 6 months.
  2. Your baby can able to sit unassisted for a minute or two.
  3. Your baby can bring food /objects direct in their mouth.
  4. Your baby has lost tongue-thrust reflex so he/she can swallow food.
  5. Your baby shows interest in food.

Once your baby met all the signs of readiness, then you’re good to go.

There are some asking, why I choose baby-led weaning when I can easily spoon-feed my baby. My answer to that question is here, some benefits of baby-led weaning.

  1. It helps develop the baby’s hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and chewing skills.
  2. Avoids overfeeding because they’re in control of how much they will eat.
  3. Babies will be less fussy because they eat a variety of food and exposed to different flavors, colors, and textures.
  4. Enjoy eating with family.

Here is the list of some things you will need for your baby’s BLW journey.

Easy to Clean High Chair

Suction Bowl, Plate and Mat

Spoon and Fork

There are a variety of brands that you can choose. You decide if you want to buy the expensive one.

Here is what my Jann ThirdyBear Eats

Squash Moringa Spaghetti
Deconstructed Sinigang sa Miso
Squash Rice Ball
Overnight Oats

When we started BLW, I realized that it needs more time, patience, and effort. It’s not always rainbows and butterflies when doing BLW. There are times that my baby doesn’t want to eat, he played the food and eat nothing, but the key to a successful BLW Journey is to keep offering. Never give up! Even on the scariest part of it, which is the gagging. When we decide to try BLW to Jann, we prepare and educate ourselves to the risk of it “Choking”. The first thing we do is to watch first aid when the child is choking, second is to know the difference between ” gagging and choking”. My advice is you have to prepare yourself and keep calm. When I first saw Jann gagging I was nervous but I keep myself calm and watch him how he handled it, I am so proud that he did it.

So, to those mommies who wanted to try Baby-Led Weaning, don’t hesitate to give it a try. Once you see how peaceful your baby eats, it will be all worth it. Yes BLW requires time and effort and Yes it is messy but it’s all worth it.
